Charlie had made her decision - she was going back to Ireland with Adam, and there was nothing he could do to stop her.

Before he had even flown back, she had called Mikey and they'd had a short conversation. He'd been annoyed at what she was asking, grumpy because he knew she was right, and quick to accuse the both of them of being idiots...but he'd reluctantly agreed that it was heart wrenching to be apart from the person that you loved.

The second day Adam was there, she had gone into work and given them notice. They had been sad to see her go,  considering how long she'd been working in the company, but the smile and her ring, which she usually removed for work so it wasn't damaged, were enough to keep the men grinning and congratulating her, and the other women tittering. All of them were wishing her luck, looking as happy as one could be expected when they found out that their own child was getting married.

Adam had told her to stay out of Rome, to wait for him to come see her after Conclave was over. He had flown back, and she no longer had to be secretive about her plotting and packing. She didn't have enough patience for that, even - she wanted to be there for him, even if he already considered her there in spirit. She wanted to be able to hug him as soon as he was out, as soon as she possibly could. She wasn't going to wait for a flight to be booked and for him to come back to Birmingham. Whether Adam was to be locked in Conclave for a day, or a week, or a year, or a decade, she was going to be here waiting for him.

Two days after Conclave began, she was stepping inside an apartment that was being lent to her by one of Mikey's friends. It was his summer escape for 'Rome-ance', and she had almost cringed, but she'd been too grateful to say anything about how corny his stupid pun was. He was a sweet guy, after all. And he was willing to let her stay there as long as she needed, as long as she kept the place clean and kept out of his way when he wanted to come stay there. She was only staying in the spare room, after all. Housing was all she had needed. Between her savings and Mikey insisting on helping to support her financially, she could keep herself afloat easily for a about a year without getting a job...though if Conclave dragged on past a month, she'd probably get one anyway.

For now, she spent her spare time in the gardens around St. Peter's Square, taking pictures, thinking about their conversation about kids, and sometimes, contemplating her navel for lack of a better thing to do.

She always kept one eye on the sky, watching the black smoke drift from the Church.

When the white smoke blended into the clouds, so soon after things had begun, despite Adam's warning...an odd drop in her stomach, rather than excitement, had her bolting to the Square to see the new Pope being introduced. She heard his name before she saw him standing there, and it felt like she'd swallowed a brick of lead.

Of course she would always be happy for him.

She would always be happy for him.

She would be happy.

She was...

On the edge of St. Peter's Square, as hundreds and then thousands of people began to cheer and cry and pray, one tiny redheaded woman dropped to her knees in despair as tears began to roll down her cheeks.
It's bad enough to be married secretly to a Cardinal, man.

Even if you don't have sex.

Why'd he have to go and get all pope'd and shit?

Adam is Drift's, Charlie is mine.
